Profile

The Starlite Orchestra is a cooperative band of local professional musicians who share the common interest of playing advanced melodically and harmonically developed popular music, often termed the big band sound. These musicians also share the belief that the principal avenue of expressing this music is through the dance band, although concerts make up a significant portion of the orchestra's engagements.

The Starlite Orchestra was formed in 1980 and played its first engagements in Adams Morgan, a Washington sub-division. Since its inception, the band has featured the best known classic arrangements of songs as recorded by the original name bands and artists. Many of these arrangements are based on classical melodies. In so doing, The Starlite Orchestra has become known as "the band that plays the classics." The Starlite Orchestra is highly community conscious and appears for many charitable causes. The band performed five times in a four month period on a major radio station in support of local benefits.

Trux Baldwin, a Washington DC resident, is The Starlite Orchestra band leader. While earning a degree in engineering at Yale University he studied music and played saxophone and clarinet in the Yale marching and concert bands and the Yale Collegians, a celebrated college dance band. He has a masters degree or a certificate from The George Washington University in business, The American University in R&D management and The Industrial College of The Armed Forces in the operation of manufacturing firms. He holds FAA commercial pilot and flight instructor certificates.

The Starlite Orchestra has numbered alumni of seven ivy league colleges and many of the nation's leading schools of music. Many of the musicians are also in medical and scientific fields. The orchestra includes musicians in Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force musical organizations based in the Washington area. The Starlite Orchestra includes one of the better local female vocalists on most of its engagements or backs visiting national artists. An eight piece string ensemble is a frequent adjunct to the music. The Starlite Orchestra musicians are members of AFofM Local 161-710, DC Federation of Musicians.
